Isn't it funny how we keep forgetting who we are?

James 1:23-25 speaks of a man who looks in a mirror. And when he goes away, he forgets what he looks like. In the same way, we hear the Word, but when we don't practice it, we forget who we are as Christians and what God has called us to do. We become fearful of so many things because we forget that God Himself said:
Have I not commanded you be strong and courageous? Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
- Joshua 1:9
And yet, we forget. Why? Because the world makes us. The more we try to be like Jesus, the more we don't fit in today's world with it's warped values and it's mess of mindless statutes. Just look around you-- Everywhere you look, crazy things! Violence and sex, sex and violence! It's in magazines, comics, TV, movies, video games, websites... You can't watch TV without death, violence and sexual innuendo oozing out the screen. You can hardly check your e-mail without some spammer telling you about Viagra.

If it wasnt obvious enough why we don't fit in, God himself tells us why the world does not accept us the more we become like Christ:
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God. And that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
- 1 John 3:1
So the alternative is to try our best to fit in, right? But doing that makes us less like Christ. It strips us of our identity in God.

You see, despite what the world throws at us, we are called, above all else, to love. Love God with everything that we have, and after that, love others as ourselves. Moreover, Jesus told us in John 13:34 to love others just as He loved us. There are no greater commandments than these, because all the others come under them. Pretty tough, huh?

But when it comes down to it, all we have to do is ask God to help us love others like He does. 'Cause let's face it-- We can't do it ourselves.

Love with the heart of the Father; Live with the faith of the Son. With God, it's that simple.
